NBA Waiver Wire Pickups Dec 30th

Ish Smith

Following the injury to Reggie Jackson, Ish Smith will take over the starting point duties for the foreseeable future. In his first start, Smith had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists against the Magic. Last season, during the month of April, he averaged 30+ minutes in four out of five games and averaged 16.6 points, 7.4 assists and three rebounds per game. It was his first game eclipsing the 30+ minute mark this season, so he should be owned in all formats.

Tyus Jones

Another injury will push another young point guard into more minutes. Tyus Jones won’t contribute much in scoring with so many weapons around him, but he should pick up a few assists. He is more of a steals specialist (five last game) and won’t turn the ball over that much. If you missed out on Ish Smith and have Lonzo Ball/Jeff Teague on the shelf, consider Tyus Jones for the short term. The Timberwolves have four games this week – one featuring a current playoff team in the Celtics.

Trey Lyles

I thought about adding Trey Lyles to this list last week, but wanted to see another week of production from the Kentucky product. He has averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and 2.2 3-pointers in his last seven games. It’s not a guarantee that Paul Millsap will return from his injury before the All-Star break and who knows how much he will play if/when he does return.
